DINO POET

BOOK 1

Author’s Note

We ran out of room in the print edition of DINO POET, so here’s the author’s note that should have been in the back of the book.

Dinosaurs were pretty amazing, but they didn’t actually write down poems with pens from a pen tree while hanging out with talking frogs. So don’t use anything from this book for writing a report or anything.

But, each of the dinosaurs in this book ARE based on real dinosaurs… and a real frog. Some of these dinosaurs (and frog) may not have actually lived in the same place at the same time. I’m also pretty sure that none of them was named Bob.

I had a great time looking through books and websites picking out the dinosaurs (and frog) that I wanted to draw for this story. Since there are no photographs of dinosaurs, I was inspired by the scientific illustrators who look at fossils and other research to give us an idea of what dinosaurs may have actually looked like.

If you want to know more about these dinosaurs or find inspiration for your own drawings, you might enjoy some of these sources:

The Concise Dinosaur Encyclopedia, by David Burnie and illustrated by John Sibbick. (Mr. Sibbick draws dinosaurs a million times better than I do!)

Scientific American website: www.scientificamerican.com/dinosaurs (When looking for facts on the Internet, make sure you’re using a good source based on real science.)

Dinosaurs: DK Sticker Encyclopedia (Very informative and very sticky!)

And if you want to know more about the frog, look for the book: Amphibian Fossils, by Mariel Bard.
