Unfortunately you will have to endure my rambling, for there is a story to be told behind the fold.
I created this back in 2020, I had read the books as a kid and picked them back up as free time was very abundant and I had started a yearly ritual of re-reading the series back in 2016 anyway. I also intentionally decided not to look up if one already existed, because it was 2020 and I personally felt I had too much time on my hands to just fold someone elses Rebel Insignia.
I was going to fold my own, with a couple very simple rules. Rule number one was to use the “Kellen Drawing” of the two page rebel insignia fold that appears on page 136 of Book IV (Jabba The Puppet) as my only reference. Rule two was to attempt to do so using only one piece of paper, again free time was all the time for a majority of 2020, I had the time to figure it out. Rule three was to, if at all possible come up with my own innovation on top of that to bring that design as far closer to the proportions of the genuine rebel insignia as I could
It took about three days, day one I folded and refolded a piece of paper until it was tearing itself to shreds, day two I stumbled across the breakthrough that made the design work, but again, paper was more like a torn up rag by the time I did, day three I pretty easily worked out the final details and made the “good copy”.
I then proceeded to put it “somewhere safe” and then wasnt able to find it these past five and a half years… until earlier this week. I still believe my design holds up as having satisfied the three requirements I set out with at the time. However also this week I finally decided “why not?” and looked up origami rebel insignia. It turns out that four versions already exist, one by @starwarsorigami on Youtube in November of 2022, one on here from EvilEwok from 2015 that uses 2 pages, one on here in 2014 from SFRob (if that one has instructions I may be able to crack a fold for the jedi order symbol as well [again, without looking at previous folds in existence]), and last of all, a fold that essentially does the same thing mine does, created 7 years earlier, posted here and elsewhere in 2013 by one SF Firk/ Firk FTW. Mine does have one key difference to create a more circular bottom but aside from that they definitely deserve the credit for coming up with this fold long before I did.
If theres enough interest as well I also will do a ground up redesign of the fold, Ive had five years of attempts to rediscover how I did the original AND the original right in front of my face, along with that 2022 youtube channel design that’s the first to accurately do the three points on the firebird’s head Ive seen, but it does so with 2 layers of the singular page, so a new thing to replicate with 1/2 as much paper I guess!
Bonus points to anyone who can guess/knows what differs in mine as well I suppose?
