TALK TO TOM – Dec. 1, 2023

Hey SFs! I love talking to you amazing Superfolders! And we haven’t done one of these in far too long. Anytime you have a question, submit it with “Talk to Tom” and your SF name in the title. I’ll try to include it in the next round-up….

(PS the image above will show you a little non-origami hobby of mine: train watching.)

Hi, Tom!

Do you have any teasers for Two-Headed Chicken 3? I know it probably won’t release for a while, but I’m one of those people who likes to figure something out before it releases. Here’s all I know so far:

1. It exists… or will eventually.
2. It will feature a a new version of the Two-Headed Chicken with the Astro-Cap™️ and the Time Cap™️.
3. It will feature the MOOSE method.

Thank you for reading my message! BZOOOOOOOOOOOOP!

ANSWER: First of all, I’m excited that you’re interested in book 3! Now I’ll have to try to make it good enough to be excited about!

I think I can safely give you a pretty big hint: instead of jumping from universe to universe, or time period to time period…. the Two-Headed Chicken’s two caps allow it to jump from BOOK TO BOOK!!! Including… Origami Yoda? (Yes!)

Tom do you want to make a movie for one of your books that would be awesome but I’m just saying if you would make a movie if you could.

ANSWER: Yes, it would be so awesome to have a movie! An Origami Yoda movie — or TV series — could be a lot of fun. What if instead of a paper casefile, they make youtube videos, including doodley animations by Kellen!

Ok, so there’s a question that I’ve been holding onto for almost a year now, and it’s a bit complicated so bear with me. Throughout the Origami Yoda series you drew the little doodles on the sides of the pages. For the doodles of new puppet characters (like when new puppets are mentioned such as Foldy wan, Pad-me, and Mace Windu), did you base them on a existing puppet that you folded beforehand (i.e. You folded the Mace windu puppet and drew the doodles based on it), or is it just something that you drew with or without any reference images/guidelines? Again, I know this question is a little bit complicated, but its just been on my mind for a bit. Anyway, thank you for having another Talk to Tom, and I cannot wait for the next one!

P.S. the attached image is the wall behind my desk that I put origami on as decoration.

ANSWER: Your wall is AMAZING!!!

As for the doodles… this is a great question! The answer is that the books were made on tight deadlines and I often had very VERY little time to make the doodles. So if I needed to create a new origami drawing, I would try to draw it like I THOUGHT it could be folded. But I didn’t really have the time to fold them right then in many cases. I knew that if I drew them, you SuperFolders could figure out how to make them!!!

Tom, will you make origami instructions for other pop culture characters?

ANSWER: I’ve made a few: Spock, Animal crossing and Rocket Racoon, but so many characters can be made with a universal puppet or the Animal crossing base that I like to let you SFs use your creativity to do the rest!

What is your favorite Academy Award for Best Picture winner? There are 95 of them.
P.S. The three films that won the most Oscars were “Ben-Hur” (1959), “Titanic”, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”, all winners of 11, including Best Picture.

ANSWER: CASABLANCA, followed closely by Sound of Music.

Interestingly, some of my least favorite movies — such as Rain Man — show up in the winners and nominees list.

I’d be interested to hear other SFs answers!
